RIS has international accreditation by COGNIA, attesting that the school maintains a high level of academic qualification, excellence in educational standards, training of our professionals, adequacy of facilities, care for the safety and well-being of students, and a measurable continuous improvement process. in the provision of our services. COGNIA, the largest accreditation agency for international schools in the United States, conducts in-person and periodic assessments of RIS’s compliance with rigorous educational quality standards. The COGNIA seal appears on the diplomas issued by the Rio International School, opening doors for our students to be accepted at several universities around the world.

Our school is certified by the Secretary of Education of the State of Rio de Janeiro as an international school, effectively locally ratifying the accreditation granted by COGNIA and confirming that RIS meets all national and international curriculum requirements.
We are one of the only schools in Rio de Janeiro authorized and qualified to offer the AP – Advanced Placement study program and to apply the proficiency exams for this program. The Advanced Placement program provides advanced studies to participating students, anticipating courses and credits from North American universities while the student is still in high school. With the result of the AP exam, the student will also be able to have greater chances of admission and advantages in top American and foreign universities.
During the school year, RIS applies the MAPGrowth adaptive test. This test provides detailed and analytical data for each student, compared to results from students around the world. It helps our faculty identify individual student strengths and needs and develop strategies to achieve established growth goals.

Our students are also encouraged to take the PSAT, SAT, ACT and/or TOEFL. Most of these tests are organized externally and are useful for the university admissions process.
