Elementary School – Curriculum

Rio International School Primary (1st to 5th grades) program further emphasizes a variety of academic methods to empower our young students as self-directed human beings. Our focus here is to provide learner-centered environments in order for RIS students to have an active voice and increase their sense of critical and analytical thinking.

RIS Primary ages range from 6 to 11-years-old. During this time our students begin to have greater responsibilities in the school and increase in maturity, accompanied by growing independence.

Students begin to explore the complexities of their world, its beauty and its brokenness. At this point they consider their own responsibility, actions and consequences as part of the world. There is a deep understanding of God’s word and a central focus on Christian character as part of their lives.

Besides emphasizing the ability to read, write and learning mathematics, students acquire deep knowledge and develop understanding across a wide variety of disciplines: English language, arts, Portuguese, Science, History, Geography, Bible, Music, Social Studies, Brazilian Geography, French, Digital Life and Physical Education.

At this time, RIS naturally creates for its students a more anxious need to learn, become independent thinkers and as a result, are able to make intelligent decisions. Not to mention students are able to assess and recognize their strengths and limitations, in order to enhance and drive them in their learning and development.

RIS Primary day school runs from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday we run from 9:20 am to 3:30 pm.

For this stage RIS also offers several activities that are part of our after school and extended hours program. After school from 3:30 pm to 4:30pm and extended hours from 3:30 pm to 5:30pm.
