Academic Program

Academic Program

Rio International School follows the American curriculum, based on “Common Core State Standards” and “Virginia State Standards of Learning”, and our Brazilian program is approved and fulfill the workload required by “Secretary of Education of the State of Rio de Janeiro”.
RIS is international accredited in education by COGNIA, a respectable organization that accredits schools in the United States and South America which meet the guidelines and standards established for American Education.
RIS offers AP – Advanced Placement which is a College Board program that provides high school students the opportunity to take college-level courses.
We utilize a mixture of physical and digital textbooks in addition to online learning platforms, and administrate standardized tests and comprehensive exams, that vary by grade.

E.L.D. - English Language Development

RIS offers ELD support classes that are designed to help new students who need to improve their knowledge and fluency in English until they are prepared to take the regular English classes: E.L.A. (English Language Arts). The classes focus lies on developing the four basic language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing; to that end, students will be exposed to a number of different materials and media. The classes are entirely in English and students will be encouraged to use English at all times in class and outside of it from day one. Since needs can vary from group to group, both the materials and the activities are tailored to cater for the needs of each group.

M.A.P test

M.A.P. (Measures of Academic Progress) is an independent, computerized test that includes an adaptive approach designed to provide a heatmap of a student´s skill level in English, Mathematics and Science. The tool offers a number of benefits: it helps us to monitor the achievement of learning objectives; the specific strengths and difficulties of each student; and ways to adjust classroom systems to inspire individual academic progress. The M.A.P test is part of the RIS academic curriculum and it is performed 2 times per year from 1st to 11° grades for English andMath, including Science from 3rd to 11°.

PSAT

The Preliminary SAT, also known as the PSAT/NMSQT® (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is a practice version of the SAT exam. The PSAT is taken during the school day and takes about 3 hours. It is administered each year for students in grades 8° to 11°.

SAT

SAT is an entrance exam used by most American and Canadian colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The SAT is a multiple-choice test created and administered by the College Board that tests student´s writing, critical reading, mathematics knowledge and skills, that takes 3 hours 50 minutes, including the essay. RIS Students in grades 11° and 12° are encouraged to register for and take the SAT, the ACT, and/or the TOEFL. These tests are organized off-site and are useful for the university admission process.
